What I love about my job: Bringing out the best in people and helping them see what they don't see in themselves.
Devi Vallabhaneni has almost two decades of experience interviewing and evaluating Harvard Business School (HBS) candidates, a passion she first developed when she herself was a second-year student at the school. Having graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BS in accountancy, Devi spent four years as a senior consultant with Arthur Andersen in the firm’s Chicago, Singapore, and Hong Kong offices before choosing to pursue her MBA. At HBS, she conducted information sessions for interested applicants and their families, sharing her personal experiences as a student and explaining all the MBA program has to offer.
After relocating to San Francisco to work for Gap, Inc., she continued to share her love and respect for her MBA alma mater by serving on panels as an alumna and speaking about her years in the program. Devi—who has passed both the CPA Exam and the CFA Level I Exam—then worked with her father for many years developing private-label business courses for colleges and universities. This experience became the subject of an HBS case study in 2006.
In the 2000s, she became even more involved with the HBS admissions process by becoming an alumni interviewer in Los Angeles, meeting with candidates throughout Southern California. In 2013, she joined the HBS Admissions Board and spent three years interviewing hundreds of applicants in Boston, London, and Paris. During this time, she also helped the school with women’s outreach, completed special projects for the dean of admissions, and advised on the testing strategy for HBS CORe.
Devi has interacted with HBS candidates from all backgrounds, walks of life, cultures, industries, functions, and positions. Because of her personal history with the school, years of collaboration with the admissions committee, and exhaustive experience as an MBA interviewer, she brings a unique level of enthusiasm, intensity, and insight to helping applicants bring out the best of themselves for this important step in their admissions journey.
On a personal level, Devi is an award-winning visual artist and has written fashion trivia for the New York Times and the Business of Fashion.
