Each week Manhattan GMAT posts a GMAT question on our blog and follows up with the answer the next day. Are you up for the challenge?
For any numbers a and b, min(a, b) and max(a, b) represent the minimum and the maximum of a and b, respectively. If c > a, is a < b < c?
(1) min(max(a, b), c) = max(min(b, c), a)
(2) max(max(a, b), c) – min(min(b, c), a) > c – a
(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
(C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data are needed.
