The mbaMission Podcast: Why “Nontraditional” MBA Applicants Don’t Exist | Ep 106

MBA applicants often wonder whether their background will be an advantage or a disadvantage in the competitive admissions process. Consultants and investment bankers are concerned with how they can stand out in a crowded applicant pool, while teachers, military officers, entrepreneurs, and other less-conventional MBA candidates worry that admissions committees will not take their candidacies as seriously.

In this episode of The mbaMission Podcast, mbaMission Founder Jeremy Shinewald and mbaMission Senior Consultant Harold Simansky explain why both groups are focusing on the wrong issue, noting that no such thing as a truly “traditional” or “nontraditional” MBA applicant even exists. What matters in the MBA admissions world is not your professional label but your impact, leadership, and engagement with others.

The discussion explores how candidates can differentiate themselves in their application in a personal and compelling way. For example, a consultant who performs as a clown in a children’s hospital on the weekends would have a memorable story to tell, as would a banker who organized a film club at their office. The MBA admissions committees want to build cohorts of individuals who will contribute to both the classroom and the broader school community.

Jeremy and Harold also offer some critical advice for aspiring MBAs who plan to apply to business school in three to four years: Pursue an activity or interest that genuinely interests you. Rather than joining an organization solely because you think it might look impressive on your application, seek opportunities where you can have a meaningful impact. That might mean coaching youth basketball, volunteering regularly at a local nonprofit, creating an employee resource group, or launching a new initiative at work. Authentic engagement often results in applicants’ strongest stories.

The conversation also highlights how critical execution is. Even applicants with highly distinctive backgrounds cannot assume that their uniqueness alone will get them accepted and must commit to making every single part of their application as strong as possible. Candidates from less-conventional professions need to demonstrate their academic readiness and strong leadership potential, while applicants from overrepresented industries must showcase the elements of their profile that only they can claim.

In addition, Jeremy and Harold discuss memorable applicants they have worked with over the years, including professional athletes, chefs, clergy members, elected officials, entrepreneurs, and consultants with unexpected passions and experiences. These applicants were not successful because of their atypical profession but because they distinguished themselves through their values, perspective, and commitment to creating impact.

So, rather than worrying about whether your background is traditional or nontraditional, focus on demonstrating how you have made a difference, what motivates you, and what you can contribute to your future MBA community. These are what the admissions committees value most.
