The mbaMission Podcast: Is an MBA Worth the Investment in 2026 and Beyond? | Ep. 113

In this episode of The mbaMission Podcast, mbaMission Senior Consultant Harold Simansky, Founder Jeremy Shinewald, and Managing Director Gavriella Semaya discuss whether MBA students in 2026 and going forward can expect to see a meaningful return on their investment in the degree. The question eludes a simple yes-or-no answer. While the degree can deliver enormous value, applicants must measure that value through the proper lens.

The MBA Payoff Often Builds Over Time

Many business school applicants focus on the first job they will land after graduating—the salary, signing bonus, title, and company. All those things matter, of course, but Jeremy argues that the degree’s true value often becomes clearer much later in one’s career. Business school does not just teach you specific technical skills that position you to land a more advanced job; it helps you develop into a well-rounded leader who can effectively approach problems from multiple angles at once. This in turn leads to a consistent leveling up in one’s career, which over time delivers the true payoff.

Human Skills Hold Value Amid AI’s Advancement

The hosts also discuss why a business school education might be even more valuable—not less so—in an AI-driven workplace. AI can expedite the summarization, calculation, and analysis of data, but business leaders need to be able to properly evaluate the output to make productive decisions. Gavriella notes that AI-generated advice does not always make sense for certain people, teams, and business problems. And Harold adds that leaders need to manage across personalities, communicate with nuance, and build trust. Those skills remain deeply human.

Business School Costs Deserve Serious Attention

Aspiring MBA students should honestly evaluate what they will need to pay to earn their degree in terms of tuition, living expenses, and missed wages and retirement savings during their time away from work. Harold recommends that applicants check the employment reports of their target MBA programs to understand what positions students tend to enter after graduation and what their starting incomes are. Candidates can then determine whether those factors align with their goals. Gavriella explains that applicants should view their investment in the degree as a long-term one, with the full reward extending across years, or even decades.

Business school can help students develop strong judgment skills, confidence, rewarding relationships, and a clearer professional trajectory—and these benefits tend to compound over time. So perhaps applicants should not be asking whether the first post-MBA job they land will justify the expense of the degree but instead whether the MBA can help them become the kind of long-term leader, colleague, and decision-maker they want to be.
