The mbaMission Podcast: Product Management as an MBA Career Path | Ep. 99

Product management (PM) has become one of the most sought-after post-MBA career paths, yet most applicants associate it only with Silicon Valley. In this episode of The mbaMission Podcast, Managing Director Rachel Beck and host Harold Simansky dig into what PM really is, why earning an MBA is a strategic entry point, and which business schools are quietly building some of the strongest PM pipelines in the industry.

Rachel describes the product manager role as that of a “mini CEO.” This person is responsible for the strategic direction of a product, working across engineering, operations, marketing, finance, accounting, and strategy simultaneously. The role has grown far beyond tech companies. From accounting firms building client tools to healthcare providers developing patient platforms to fitness brands creating digital products, product managers are embedded in every industry. Harold offers this simple illustration: search “product manager” on LinkedIn, and you will find listings from sneaker companies, financial services firms, and everything in between.

The conversation turns to why business school is a smart entry point, especially in the current AI environment. Rachel notes that while AI is changing the nature of technical work, it is not replacing the strategic thinking that product managers do. The MBA core curriculum covers exactly the skills product managers need: operations, marketing, finance, accounting, and strategy. Rachel is quick to caution that candidates cannot simply arrive from a nontechnical background without any technical foundation, but explains how business school can help students bridge that gap through experiential and action learning programs.

Harold and Rachel highlight several programs that do PM particularly well. Carnegie Mellon Tepper, Washington Foster, and UT Austin McCombs are cited as schools with deep PM roots. Rachel also spotlights Kellogg’s MMM program and MBAI joint degree as standout options for candidates who want to combine business acumen with technical or design skills. Both hosts note that PM is uniquely accessible across industries, making it one of the most versatile post-MBA paths available today.
