Diamonds in the Rough: Opportunities at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business

MBA applicants can get carried away with rankings. In this series, we profile amazing programs at business schools that are typically ranked outside the top 15.

In 2013, the University of Texas McCombs School of Business introduced several highlights to its MBA experience that would allow students to benefit from expanded opportunities for work experience (including with nonprofits), entrepreneurship, and leadership programming.

For example, a pilot program for brand management experience with Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Yahoo! brand was expanded. In what is now called the Marketing Labs program, teams of students learn marketing skills working hands-on for major firms.

Another addition, the new Texas Venture Labs Scholarship awards MBA scholarships to winners of a start-up pitch competition, in which both admitted and prospective students can compete. In the area of nonprofit work, McCombs hosts a chapter of the Net Impact program, which affords students the chance to work on socially and environmentally responsible projects aimed at solving major societal problems. In 2014, the McCombs chapter was chosen as the Net Impact Graduate Chapter of the Year.
