Today, we focus on <strong>Michael Porter<\/strong>\u00a0from Harvard Business School (HBS).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9494\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Michael Porter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michael-Porter-265x300.jpg\" alt=\" width=\"170\" height=\"192\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michael-Porter-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Michael-Porter.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>\u201cGenerally recognized as the father of the modern strategy field,\u201d according to the HBS Web site, <strong>Michael E. Porter<\/strong>\u00a0(MBA \u201971) (\u201cMicroeconomics of Competitiveness: Firms, Clusters and Economic Development\u201d)\u00a0is director of the school\u2019s Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness. Porter\u2019s \u201cMicroeconomics of Competitiveness\u201d course is offered through the institute and is open to all graduate students at Harvard, Tufts, and MIT. The course reportedly differs from most MBA offerings in that it focuses on economic development rather than management, involves longer sessions, requires more reading assignments, and concludes with a team project rather than a final exam.<\/p>\n<p>Porter, who received his PhD from Harvard University in 1973, has studied competition in the health care system and coauthored the book <em>Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results<\/em> (Harvard Business Review Press, 2006). Other titles by Porter include <em>Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors<\/em> (Free Press, 1998), <em>Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance<\/em> (Free Press, 1998) and <em>On Competition, Updated and Expanded Edition<\/em><em> <\/em>(Harvard Business School Press, 2008).
