The school currently states that applicants should have at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mit-sloan-fellows-mba-program\/admissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ten years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of relevant full-time work experience. Sloan Fellows students step away from work and immerse themselves on campus in much the same way as students in the traditional two-year MBA program do, but the compressed experience does not include time for a summer internship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricardo identifies three broad groups of MBA hopefuls who could benefit from the program: professionals who want to accelerate within their organizations, people who want to build a company or nonprofit, and candidates who want to switch or augment their career direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricardo wanted to pair his expertise in biotech and pharmaceuticals with the ability to understand how companies are funded, valued, and operated. His path reflects what the admissions committee is looking for in Sloan Fellow applicants: an understanding of how the MBA will extend what they already know to allow them to enter the next phase of their career.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_is_the_12-month_program_structured\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Is the 12-Month Program Structured?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sloan Fellows curriculum begins with students developing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mit-sloan-fellows-mba-program\/explore-program\/curriculum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general management and are then given significant freedom to customize their coursework. Ricardo pursued certificates in Finance and in Entrepreneurship and Innovation while studying healthcare finance, venture capital, private equity, and capital markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student cohort helps shape the experience. Students arrive on campus with substantial expertise across industries, functions, and countries. Ricardo found that his classmates added firsthand context to the decisions and transactions discussed in class and that this perspective was often just as valuable as what he gained from the formal curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the program\u2019s accelerated structure creates a trade-off that all applicants must consider. Although one benefit is that students must spend less time away from the workforce, they do not have much time to test other industries or reconsider their direction. So, candidates must first determine whether they need broad exploration or have enough clarity to benefit from such a concentrated experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_can_fellows_study_across_mit\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Can Fellows Study Across MIT?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One defining advantage is access to opportunities and resources beyond MIT Sloan. Ricardo took courses elsewhere at MIT and cross-registered at Harvard, which allowed him to connect his management education with advanced training in technology, science, entrepreneurship, and leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When researching the program to determine whether it might be the right fit for you, focus on answering a key question rather than just studying the available courses. For example, Ricardo asked how he could use an MIT MBA to become a biotech-adjacent business professional and investor. This enabled him to connect courses, faculty members, entrepreneurial programs, and advising opportunities to create a coherent plan for his studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by identifying the capabilities you need to build, then investigate which courses, certificates, research centers, and applied experiences offered through the Sloan Fellows program could help you develop them. Ricardo recommends engaging with admissions representatives, faculty members, students, and alumni early on to identify which opportunities deserve priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before applying, clarify what you want the degree to make possible for you professionally over the next ten to 15 years. Consider which skills should become second nature and which communities could broaden your perspective. If you feel you need a summer internship or extended exploration to truly round out your business education, compare the Sloan Fellows option carefully against what a two-year MBA program can offer.
