Choose proximity over prestige.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcoaching your recommender<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Providing context is good. Drafting paragraphs for your recommender to insert, or pressuring them to match the language in your essays, is not. The admissions committee reads hundreds of letters each cycle and can tell when a letter has been written by the applicant. They can name the project, the outcome, and why it mattered. Although you might worry that doing so could be seen as trying to tamper with the process, nothing could be further from the truth. Top MBA programs want to be sure that your recommenders are presenting a complete picture of you. They fully understand, therefore, that some level of communication and updating on your part is important\u2014if not required\u2014in helping them do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan to meet with your recommender, and during that meeting, remind them of specific accomplishments and progress you want them to highlight in their letter. Make clear what your motivation for pursuing an MBA is, your reasons for targeting the schools you have chosen, and your post-graduation ambitions. Give your recommenders your resume and, ideally, a separate list of achievements that occurred directly under their supervision so they can easily include examples of your accomplishments and potential in their letters. Most importantly, impress upon your recommenders the importance of providing real-life evidence of any claims they make about you, wherever possible. (We know from working with overseas clients that robust, example-filled letters of recommendation are unusual in many countries. If this is the case in your country, do your best to explain to your recommender the importance of full answers laden with examples.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One simple and rather reliable way of making sure your recommenders complete their letters by the school\u2019s deadline is by giving them extra-early \u201cpersonal\u201d submission deadlines. This way, if your recommender meets your requested deadline, their letter will definitely be available to submit in time for the school\u2019s deadline. On the other hand, if one of your recommenders misses your personal deadline, you will still have some additional time left before the official deadline for this person to complete their letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_strong_recommendations_have_in_common\"><\/span><b>What Strong Recommendations Have in Common<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding what separates a great letter from a forgettable one helps you guide your recommenders toward the right approach. Rather than escalating, she convened a daily standup that ran for six weeks until the friction was gone. The product launched on time.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second statement tells a story. It attributes a particular action to a specific problem and presents the outcome.
