What types of opportunities are available right now?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can I position myself for success?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will the economy affect my career options?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, these questions have no simple answer. The information coming out of consulting firms\u2014which are traditionally big MBA employers\u2014is less than positive. According to a spring article in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mckinsey-bain-hire-new-m-b-a-s-but-they-may-not-work-for-months-d805f14b?mod=e2tw\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a more recent article in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/poetsandquants.com\/2023\/08\/03\/another-major-consulting-firm-delays-start-dates-for-its-mba-hires\/?pq-category=business-school-news&amp;pq-category-2=mba-jobs\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poets&amp;Quants<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, start dates for the Class of 2023 are being pushed back by major consulting firms, and overall, full-time hiring for the Class of 2024 is lighter than in past years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the full picture can be a bit more complicated and sector specific, and we know that the job market can change rapidly. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To better understand what kind of job market you might face, consider these factors:<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career interests<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your professional goals? Are you making a big career change? Which organizations are you targeting?&nbsp;Do they hire a large number of MBAs?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experience and skills<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What functional and industry expertise do you have? What are your strongest skills? What types of problems can you solve, or what contributions could you make to a prospective employer?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Storytelling<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How well can you connect the dots between your experiences and your desired position?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>School <\/b>support<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your MBA program have strong relationships with its alumni and with your desired employers? What type of career coaching support is available?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marketplace realitie<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the business and hiring trends in the industry you hope to enter? What challenges are your target companies facing? How much hiring have these companies done in the past 12 months? Have they had any layoffs?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal resources and attributes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How strong is your network? How comfortable are you reaching out and leveraging that network? Will you hustle in the job search?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting realistic expectations and positioning yourself for the best opportunities will require that you develop an informed perspective on your target industry. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with these steps:\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speak with representatives from your school\u2019s career management center.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are often in close contact with major MBA employers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connect with people currently employed in your target area<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span>&#8211;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and with classmates who just completed internships at your target companies<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identify and read industry-specific business news <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover related trade publications and websites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, remember that regardless of the strength of the job market, you always need to position yourself as a compelling candidate.
