By discussing your professional aspirations as well as your experiences and values, you have the opportunity to provide the admissions committee with a well-rounded impression of yourself, in addition to illustrating your fit with the school. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our analysis that follows, we provide more in-depth guidance on each of Wharton\u2019s 2026\u20132027 essay questions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also note a major change to its general application that was made last year: Wharton now asks for only one recommendation and will send the form, which includes two standard recommendation questions, to the recommender whose name you enter. (50 words)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>&#8211; Describe your medium- and long-term professional goals after your Wharton MBA. (150 words)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to this first prompt, which has limit of only 50 words, the Wharton admissions committee wants you to spell out the role you have in mind for yourself upon graduation. Therefore, sharing \u201cjust the facts\u201d in a mere two or three sentences will suffice. In the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mba.wharton.upenn.edu\/application-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips from the Admissions Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for this question, Wharton says to \u201cthink title, function, industry, etc.\u201d However, if space allows, you might want to take things a step further and name your target company (or companies) as well. Ideally, the role and firm you cite will be one for which recruiters regularly hire Wharton MBAs. This information is available in Wharton\u2019s employment report as well as via the school\u2019s information sessions and conversations with students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the second prompt, which asks about your medium- and long-term aspirations, Wharton wants to understand how you envision your career trajectory. The short-term goal you presented in response to the first prompt should be very specific, but that level of specificity is not needed in this response. However, you want the admissions committee to be confident that you have given serious thought to what your next professional steps might be after you have spent a few years in your immediate post-MBA position. In its \u201cTips,\u201d the admissions committee explains that it is more interested in hearing about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hope to achieve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the specific <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">role<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have in mind. You should therefore paint a picture that describes the impact you expect to make in the medium term and how that connects to your long-term goal\u2014which should be even more ambitious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also want to explain your rationale behind your motivations. Despite the mere 150 words available to you for this essay, including some context for your aspirations might be helpful. What have you done in the past\u2014in either your personal or your professional life\u2014that illustrates your desire to make your chosen impact? You should clearly convey this, in addition to showing that you have (or will, post-MBA) the professional skills and experience necessary to achieve your future goals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This prompt is asking for a core component of a traditional MBA personal statement. (350 words)\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breadth of this essay question allows you to provide a well-rounded picture of yourself for the admissions committee because you can discuss multiple aspects of stories from your life and draw from any area (personal, professional, community related, and\/or academic), which allows you to highlight your strongest and most relevant options. However, the word count is fairly restrictive, so you must be concise in doing so, without sacrificing effectiveness or thoroughness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend using approximately one-half of your allowed word count to describe your chosen experience(s) or quality(-ties), so that you have sufficient space in which to then explain how it (they) will enable you to contribute to the Wharton community in a meaningful way. Do your best to \u201cshow,\u201d or really spell out, your story\u2014rather than just flatly presenting or stating it\u2014to give the admissions reader some perspective and context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You then need to demonstrate both self-awareness and, again, a thorough understanding of the Wharton MBA experience by drawing connections between what you have shared about yourself and what you subsequently can bring to the school as a member of its community. For example, a past project might have given you some critical insights and skills that you could now pass on to your classmates in a related class or club. Or maybe a personal challenge gave you an interesting new perspective on commitment, determination, or another valuable quality.
