Each Wednesday, we profile a standout professor as identified by students. Today, we focus on <strong>James Van Horne<\/strong> from the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7725\" title=\"James Van Horne\" alt=\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/James-Van-Horne-218x300.jpg\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/James-Van-Horne-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/www.mbamission.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/James-Van-Horne.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/>In an interview with mbaMission, a Stanford GSB alumnus described <strong>James Van Horne<\/strong> (\u201cTopics in Corporate Finance\u201d) as an \u201cold school professor,\u201d because he addresses students formally, calling them \u201cMr.\/Ms.\/Mrs.\u201d He is notorious for cold-calling students, and once he has selected a student to cold-call, often focuses on that same student for the duration of the class. As a result, students tend to prepare for his class with vigor. The alumnus added, \u201cHe pushes and pushes to make you justify every excruciating detail of your decisions, and will force you to make a definite decision before continuing with the discussion.\u201d An advanced finance class open to second-year students, Van Horne\u2019s \u201cTopics in Corporate Finance\u201d course indicates in its description that it is a quasi-seminar, because 50% of the sessions involve case discussions, and enrollment is limited. The course focuses on applications of such finance topics as capital structure, distribution policy, mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring.
