MBA News: HBS Celebrates 50 Years of Women

Fifty years ago, the Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty voted to allow women to apply to the school’s two-year MBA program for the first time. Eight women were accepted the following August, paving the way for the thousands of female HBS students who followed. This year, with women making up 40% of the incoming class, HBS is celebrating this milestone with a series of special events, programs and exhibitions looking at both the past and the future of women in business. Events include an academic conference on campus, at which faculty will discuss issues surrounding women in leadership positions, a special issue of the HBS Alumni Bulletin in December 2012, a celebration of National Women’s Day on March 8, 2013, and the HBS Alumni Summit scheduled for April 4-5, 2013. According to an email sent to HBS alumni, Dean Nitin Nohria hopes “that this will become a moment in which our entire community—alumni, faculty, staff, and students—will join together to mark the occasion, to reflect on our history, and to ask ourselves the question, where do we need to go from here?”
