MBA News: The Wall Street Journal Asks mbaMission What B-Schools Want

mbaMission Founder and President Jeremy Shinewald recently sat down with Keith Vaughn, assistant dean of MBA admissions at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business; Dawna Levenson, associate director of admissions at the MIT Sloan School of Management; and Amanda Carlson, assistant dean of admissions at Columbia Business School, for a round table discussion with the Wall Street Journal.  This quartet of admissions experts tackled topics such as how the applicant pool has changed recently (the focus on location and rankings has grown), how nontraditional candidates can stand out (the key is to connect a unique background with post-MBA career goals), how business schools and admissions consultants interact (the relationship is warming, and Levenson sees mbaMission as an advocate for B-school), how long admissions committees spend reviewing applications (approximately 20 minutes each) and how to choose and speak to recommenders. Click here to read an edited excerpt of their discussion and to see a video of Shinewald discussing one of the most common application errors.
