Friday Factoid: First Coffee at Darden

A long-standing tradition at Darden, First Coffee is a scheduled break that takes place between first and second classes Monday to Friday. Typically, the entire school – students, faculty and administration — gathers near the entrance to the school in an area named for other beverages, the Pepsico Forum, for a (free) cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. First Coffee is a prime opportunity for announcements, award presentations, cultural events and even the occasional performance. Because Darden students complete their case discussions with the same sixty students each day, First Coffee also provides a basic social opportunity to mix with those in other sections. Further, because this is “mandatory” time off for all students, many take the time to have a quick learning team or club meeting, knowing that everyone is at school and available. First Coffee is a carefully considered design element which is a significant component of a carefully constructed community.
