MBA News: GMAC Gets Tough on Cheaters

Yesterday, we blogged about GMAC’s victory over Scoretop.com, a site that was illegally distributing GMAT questions to students, who paid $30 each for membership on the site. Today, BusinessWeek has reported (“Shutting Down a GMAT Cheat Sheet”) that more than 1000 students are in jeopardy of having their scores nullified and having their targets schools find out about their mischief. BusinessWeek speculates, “For many, their B-School dreams may be effectively over.” Judy Phair, GMAC’s vice-president for communications, tells BusinessWeek, “This is illegal… If you used the site and paid your $30 to cheat, your scores will be canceled. They’re in big trouble.”
In the article, BusinessWeek raised the possibility of some MBA programs expelling existing students who are found to have used the site in the past. Schools were understandably non-committal at this point, but it is fair to write that this could be the beginning of an enduring saga.
