Mission Admission: Community Service is not a Prison Sentence

We write the above in jest. However, there is some truth to the idea that much like a judge sentences a petty criminal to community service, many MBA aspirants assume that the MBA Admissions Committee has essentially sentenced them to community service as well. Well, nothing could be further from the truth.
If you are slogging through your time as a volunteer, you certainly will not be helping yourself. Time is not the most important factor in terms of the “quality” of your community work. Your impact on others is what is crucial and revealing. Indeed, it is the spirit of how you have spent your time which will have an impact on the MBA Admissions Committee.
As you consider your community involvements (and hopefully you have done so long ago), you should choose an organization about which you can be passionate and commit yourself entirely. By dedicating yourself to an organization for which you are sincerely emphatic (just as you would your job), you will naturally find yourself in situations which will lend themselves to quality essays and powerful recommendations.
